76-year-old paedo sentenced for raping 9-year-old girl
MUSKEGON, MI - When Robert Donald Grabe was sentenced to prison Wednesday, his children attended the court hearing, but not to support him.
Grabe, 77, earlier had pleaded guilty to rape of a nine-year-old girl. The offense took place sometime from 2012 to February 2016 when the victim was at the home of Grabe's live-in girlfriend.
The abuse was discovered when the child told a parent, the county prosecutor's office has said. The parent took the child to a hospital and staff there called police.
"I'd like to make the court aware that some of the defendant's biological daughters are here," Assistant Muskegon County Prosecutor Mary Farrell said in court. "They are not victims in this case so they are not quite allowed to really make a statement to the court but they do want to make the court aware that this behavior is not recent or short term, this has gone on for years with the defendant which is their father."
Farrell said the daughters said they also had been abused by Grabe, "victims of abuse at his hands," but their cases will not prosecuted and she offered no proof besides the daughters' own testimony.
Grabe, who earlier pleaded guilty to the crime, declined to speak at his own sentencing, and his defense attorney merely ask the judge follow a commitment that was earlier made for Grabe's sentence.
Judge Timothy G. Hicks of Muskegon County's 14th Circuit Court sentenced Grabe to a minimum of eight years in the Michigan Department of Corrections with a maximum of 30 years. Grabe was also ordered to lifetime electronic monitoring when and if he's released from prison.
"Mr. Grabe, this is despicable, heinous conduct," Hicks said.
He was sentenced as a second-time habitual offender, because of a third-degree child abuse conviction from June 26, 1996, according to court records.
